Dr. Gary Jones
BESE District 5 Representative


Dr. Gary L. Jones recently retired after 44 years in public education. During that career his service spanned three school districts and ended with a brief stint at the Louisiana Department of Education.  He began as a classroom teacher and coach in the Monroe City Schools system and, when he left 28 years later, he had risen to Assistant Superintendent.  Over the next 14 years he served as Superintendent of Claiborne Parish Schools and later Rapides Parish Schools.  He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the same institution, and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Jones was recognized by the American Association of School Administrators and the Louisiana Association of School Executives as the 2010-11 Louisiana State School Superintendent of the Year, and is a past President of the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents. Dr. Jones served in virtually every capacity in public education during his career, including teacher, football coach, assistant principal and principal. He also served as personnel director, maintenance director, the transportation director, and director of child welfare and attendance. Dr. Jones’ public service also included a parallel military career of both active and reserve duty. He retired as a Brigadier General (U.S. Army) after being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1977.
