  • BESE endorses Louisiana ESSA plan, directs Department to move forward

    At a special meeting, BESE endorsed Louisiana’s draft plan to comply with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, and directed the Louisiana Department of Education to submit the plan to the U.S. Department of Education no earlier than April 15, 2017.

  • BESE approves process for science standards review

    BESE today approved a process to review the state’s academic content standards in science. Based on a committee structure led by professional Louisiana educators and encompassing extensive public input, the new review process will ensure that state science standards represent the knowledge and skills students need to succeed.

  • BESE approves Louisiana Student Standards, adopts 2016-17 education funding formula

  • New BESE sworn in, 2016 officers elected

    Members of the 2016-2019 Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) were sworn in and Board officers elected during the BESE meetings in Baton Rouge this week. The new Board elected District 1 BESE member James Garvey president, District 7 member Dr. Holly Boffy vice president, and District 2 member Kira Orange Jones secretary-treasurer for 2016.

  • BESE confirms members of student standards review committees, approves new early childhood education policies

    BESE has confirmed the members and leadership nominated to serve on the Standards Review Committee and three content subcommittees tasked with evaluating the state’s academic content standards in English and math, as well as a final timeline and process for the 2015-16 standards review. The Board also approved new policies related to early childhood care and education, strengthening provisions related to licensing and staffing requirements, and establishing new regulations related to the responsibilities and operation of the Louisiana Early Childhood Care and Education Network.

  • BESE recognizes state Teacher and Principal of the Year finalists

    At its June 2015 meetings, BESE recognized the 2016 Louisiana Teacher and Principal of the Year Finalists. Each year, the Louisiana Department of Education, in partnership with Dream Teachers, Inc. and the Louisiana Association of Principals, honors the state’s most exceptional educators through the Teacher and Principal of the Year programs.
