Statement from BESE President Dr. Gary Jones regarding MFP, K-12 education funding status

May 7, 2019

"Today BESE conducted a special meeting to receive a status report and continue its discussion on the Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) formula that it unanimously approved and submitted to the Louisiana Legislature. This formula provides sustainable, protected pay raises for our state’s teachers and school support staff while addressing the ever-increasing financial demands faced by school districts. It was carefully developed based on the consensus of a broad base of education stakeholders to responsibly meet the funding needs of K-12 public education in our state.

After today’s deliberation and consideration of the current status of the MFP in the Legislature, the Board has determined to take no additional action related to its formula at this time. As the overall picture regarding K-12 education funding at the capitol becomes clearer in the coming days, and should it become necessary for BESE to reconsider the formula, we will convene a special meeting at a reasonable and appropriate time for that purpose."
