On July 24, 2024, the Louisiana Department of Education released LEAP results for the 2023-24 school year. Louisiana students maintained recent gains made on the state assessment that measures proficiency in core academic subjects. The testing data shows that the English/language arts (ELA) mastery rate for students in grades 3-8 improved by one point and students with disabilities in grades 3-8 grew their overall mastery rate for the third consecutive year.
BESE President Ronnie Morris issued the following statement regarding the LEAP results:
“The latest LEAP data released today is encouraging, with overall performance holding steady in line with recent achievement gains. With improvement confirmed in early grades, Louisiana’s emphasis on literacy initiatives and fundamental skills development is beginning to bear fruit. The influence of those efforts will only increase, and while work remains to be done, our state remains steady on the path to improve outcomes and close achievement gaps. The variety shown among top performing schools – traditional, charter, and nonpublic – is also very significant. The availability and accessibility of quality K-12 options is a strength of Louisiana’s system, in which families are empowered to provide the best learning environment for their children.”
